Ibiza Airport started life as a military airfield in the 1930s. At the end of the 1940s, it began serving commercial flights, and by 1958, when it reopened as Es Codolá, more and more flights were arriving daily. During the 1960s, the runway was improved, allowing large aircraft to land. Passenger numbers surged and the terminal, runway and car park had to be expanded in both the 1970s and 1980s. Today it welcomes six million passengers every year.
