MARY B
Cellist
Classically trained, Mary B – also known as Marney or Mazessenza – is an Irish cellist and osteopath who went from playing for the president and prime minister of her country to settling in Ibiza, where she enjoys all genres of music – from jazz and funk to techno and trippy house. “Music has always been my religion, my way of life. Once the music is good it sparks something that moves inside you.”
JUAN ESTANISLAO
Guitar and vocals
After 25 years of experience in live music and a decade with a jazz band, the Argentine musician arrived on the island three summers ago with his architecture studies and his Latin jazz, bossa nova and bolero rhythms, as well as Spanish sounds: “My thing is to entertain and provide a soundtrack, rather than to start a party. There is huge demand for artists on Ibiza and there are incredible musicians here.”
ANTONIO BLAKSTAD
Pianist
Born in Ibiza, raised in Madrid and trained in music production in London, Antonio Blakstad is part of the duo Louie Lion, together with trumpeter Pere Navarro. They combine piano, percussion and trumpet, with the help of a looper, to create live music: “It’s usually a mix of soul, funk, afro rhythms and a bit of house, but what differentiates us is that different harmony that comes from jazz.”
ARIEL ZUTEL
Handpan
He started playing the handpan in 2006 in his native Israel and developed his own technique, since at that time nobody around him was playing it. Eleven years ago, he settled in Ibiza, where he plays acoustic and electronic handpans, as well as innovating with a shamanic flute: “I combine it with electronics and sing in Hebrew, Spanish and English. I improvise the lyrics with the feeling of the moment. It’s a game between improvisation and structure.”
OGGIE MARINSKI
Classical guitar
Born in Sofia, Bulgaria, Oggie has an extensive musical education that encompasses piano, trumpet, bass, accordion, flute, harmonica and drums, although his passion is classical guitar. As a resident of the island, he enjoys revealing the beauty of this ancient instrument in the mecca of electronic music: “I think it’s lovely to listen to something more romantic, more classical, that reminds us of the old days. When I play, I know that people feel love and that’s what I want to transmit. That’s my greatest reward.”
