When milliner Ludovic Baussan says that Ibiza “is a unique place in the world”, he knows what he is talking about. He grew up in eight different countries and decided to settle on the island, attracted by a life lived among nature and the “incredible international resident community”.
First as a hobby, then for his friends, and finally as a business venture, Ludovic designs hats for people on the island and around the world, with commissions coming from as far afield as Dubai, New York, London and Singapore.
With the level of detail typical of a craftsman, he describes the perfect hat to us: “If we are talking about quality, they must be made by hand, with noble and precious materials, and a lot of love and time. It’s what gives the hat its soul. In terms of style, and shape, height and dimension as well as decoration are an opportunity for people to tell their story and for the hat to reflect who you are and your vision of life.”

With this welcome return of the hat to the frontline of fashion, there is also a key difference to their use in times gone by. “Fifty years ago, people wore hats as a practical accessory, to protect themselves from the rain and the sun, and they also had an element of status; but they were darker hats and had no decoration. Today, they express your individuality and your personality. They can become your totem and the symbol of who you are and aspire to be.”

Ludovic creates his hats in the workshop at his country house near Sant Llorenç, on Ibiza. Local customers can meet him in person while remote customers use video calls to follow the creation process and see the result before the hat travels to its destination.
