It’s fair to say alcohol has always played a big part in Alex Norwood Hill’s life. From partying at university with The Chemical Brothers and Groove Armada, to working as a Michelin Star mixologist in London and Miami – a drink or five was always the norm. Then, on a wild stag weekend in Ibiza in 2017, he jumped off a boat near es Vedrà to touch the sacred rock. In a surreal mystical moment, he heard a female voice say: “Alex, you must purify, you must purify.” He describes it as a deep spiritual shift – a sudden inner alignment, his own personal epiphany. And from that day on, he never drank again.

That life-changing moment sparked the creation of Sober Sound System – a growing series of alcohol-free day parties on the island that Alex runs with business partner Kelly Marie, a fellow Brit, sober DJ, and house music lover. “We were told Ibiza wasn’t ready for sober events,” says Alex, “but our debut season in 2024 was incredible. Dancing in the sun, surrounded by open-hearted people, no hangover, no regrets – it amplified the magic of Ibiza. You’re totally present, connected, and alive.”
Across the globe, the sober-curious movement is accelerating. From botanical spirits and mood-enhancing IPAs to nootropic cocktails, the new wave of alcohol-free drinks is vibrant and sophisticated. In the Balearics, X Drinks are making waves with premium options that deliver both flavor and feel-good vibes. It’s no longer about what you’re missing – it’s about what you’re gaining.
“This summer we will have Noot on the bar” says Alex. “Ready to drink Limoncello Spritz and Melon Margarit cocktails packed with Nooptropics – natural herbs that boost energy, focus and memory. The effect mimics the feeling of a few alcoholic drinks but without the intoxication or the dreaded hangover.”

Today, the sober scene in Ibiza is quietly thriving — from ecstatic dances and wellness retreats to breathwork circles and sound baths. It’s not about being anti-alcohol; it’s about saying yes to presence, depth, and new kinds of highs. Alex says the community is growing fast, and more venues are adapting to it with elevated zero-proof menus, inclusive vibes, and phone-free dancefloors. The new generation wants to feel everything — not numb it out.
So why Ibiza? “Because the community here is real,” says Alex. “There’s space to grow, to connect. You meet old party heads who’ve gone clean but still carry that wild spirit. The music, the beauty, the wellness culture – it’s all here, just without the alcohol.”
Adam McLoughlin, a digital creator and ‘reformed’ clubber, knows the feeling. “Ibiza gave me what no city could – a safe space to break patterns and build a new version of myself. Sobriety here isn’t about what you give up. It’s about joy, clarity, and rediscovering your strength. This island helps you remember who you are.”
Crystin Jenkins, a coach who helps people transition to alcohol-free living, agrees. “We’ve been conditioned to think alcohol equals fun, but that’s just a story. Once you discover joy without it, you start asking why you ever needed it in the first place. Ibiza shows people they can reclaim their power, their energy, their full presence — and that’s a beautiful thing.”
