I’m sitting cross-legged inside a yurt –traditional dwelling of the nomadic peoples of central Asia– near Cala Nova and everyone around me is crying. Tears of hope, sadness, acceptance, relief and yes utter joy are cascading down people’s faces, such is the reaction to Lex Empress and her SoulSong sessions, the channelled personal medicine songs that are quite simply, changing lives.
And it is spellbinding to watch. Meeting someone for the very first time, Lex creates a brand-new song (Your Song) with musician Gillian Baracs as you sit in front of her. Her aim is to realign, clean the hearts of those in search of clarity and creating new positive behavioural patterns – or in other words, to remember who you are and why you are here.
I ask Lex if she can read a person’s soul as soon as she meets them, but that’s not how this works. “I am 1000% clear on what I am reading when I begin, but it’s only when the music starts that am I able to see a person’s code or divinity code as I like to call it as it is so pure and real. And when I am in the middle of this medicine process, I have nowhere else to go except sharing.”
Last year Lex performed 4000 SoulSongs on the island for people who are then sent their song to use as a meditation. “Sometimes a song can be so strong it can be like opening a door to a severe storm, sometimes as calm as a lake. I don’t choose the words before, I don’t choose the musical direction, I don’t choose the technique, it is all given. All I have to do is show up and sing…”
